One Stops Recognized

August and September saw our SEMCA contractors and their local partners, sponsor major job fairs throughout the SEMCA region. Ongoing job fairs are “standard” in the SEMCA workforce development programs, but the major initiatives undertaken by the Contractors in providing large scale job fairs was “above and beyond” the call of duty.

Barbara Pfister and Eileen Beckett awarded three SEMCA providers certificates recognized for their summer job fairs. Pictured above from left to right are Barbara Pfister, SEMCA; Patricia “Sam” Henisse, DCC; Red Varner, ETD; Ken Colpaert, MCETD; Eileen Beckett, SEMCA.

The job fairs were tailored to meet the needs of employers in the Contractor’s service area. In all cases though, they provided the opportunity for our customers to conveniently meet with employers, see what’s available in the region and even interview for specific jobs “on the spot” at the job fair.
The Downriver Community Conference (DCC) held the “kick-off” job fair on August 11. That event followed a day-long, Community Job - Information-Immunization format. The day’s activities were open to the public as well as to our customers. (See Fall 2000 issue of “Working Together” for more details.)

Employment and Training Designs, Inc. (ETD) followed with two job fairs on August 24th, one at the Highland Park Career Academy and one at the Wayne Community Center. The two fairs provided the opportunity for our customers to easily meet and visit with employers.
Monroe County Employment and Training (MCETD) wrapped up the fall initiative with a job fair on September 29 at Ambassador Hall (please see the article on page 3). Monroe and its partner agencies provided an opportunity for more than 30 local employers and more than 500 job seekers to meet!

SEMCA is proud to have the opportunity to express its appreciation to all of its contractors for their outstanding work in sponsoring quality, successful job fairs where our customers were able to find that next job to meet their individual needs.
