The Human Capital Needs in the Advanced Energy Sector

For those who did not attend, the note below includes the summary comments from Jean Redfield at Next Energy. The formal presentation notes from Kristin Zimmerman (General Motors/ Chevy Volt) and the overview presentation from Next Energy are also accessible from the links below.

Pay particular attention to the slides in the GM presentation, especially the one with the large list of suppliers providing parts to the new Volt. (It's tough to read but if you print it out you can see it better.) I think this is important to look at because I believe it is where most of the opportunity will be for your job seeker customers. It was pretty clear that day that the early jobs in this sector require engineering or technical degrees and there are not a lot of openings. But in automotive anyway, component parts still need to be designed, built and tested. There are, I think, more opportunities for skilled trades and associate degree level workers in the supplier companies than in the OEMs. (Think A123 and others like them for batteries, etc.) Jean also makes this point in her #4 note below.

I think the other large opportunity for less-than 4yr+ degree candidates in the future in this sector will be in installation and service of support technology. We aren't there yet but if you have far-thinking job seekers you may want them to be looking ahead in this direction.
