Identity Theft
Identity theft is a growing problem as people use more sophisticated methods to collect your personal information for malicious intent. This includes bogus email that directs you to malicious web sites and text messages that ask you to call a phone number. These messages commonly promote an offer that is too good to be true or threaten to cancel services unless you respond.
It is extremely important to understand that you should never give out your social security number or bank account information without first verifying the request is legitimate. Instead of responding to the information in the message, contact the company directly.
If you think that you may have been scammed:
-
File a police report with your local department.
-
Obtain a credit report to see if new accounts have been set up in your name.
-
Report the incident to your credit card company.
-
Place a fraud alert on your credit reports.
