ACC
(Arab-American Chaldean Council)
Since its inception 18 years ago as a one-room office operation, the ACC has grown to a comprehensive agency with 16 outreach centers located throughout the Tri-county area (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb). Over 120,000 Arab and Chaldean Americans have benefited from the ACC’s health, human, social and educational services, described in the following narrative.

Beginning in 1979 and continuing through to the
present, the ACC has worked collaboratively with the Family Independence Agency (FIA),
providing support counseling and casework staff. Over the past 12 years, the ACC has
implemented the Comprehensive Mental Health Needs and Prevention Program in collaboration
with the Detroit Wayne County Mental Health Board. This program offers in-home and
out-patient psychological-counseling, testing, evaluation, individual, group and family
therapy, crises intervention, aftercare and case management. Additionally, the ACC has
provided successful community-wide mental health awareness seminars to over several
thousand of the target community since the program’s inception.

In a similar vein, the ACC provides a Constellation of
these services through its Oakland and Macomb Counties Mental Health Programs.

The ACC’s Substance Abuse Prevention Education Program
brought the ACC’s bilingual multicultural expertise to the fore in educational outreach to
Arab and Chaldean-American youth to inform them of the danger of drug abuse. They program
also provided direct counseling services to the at-risk or addicted youth and their
families. (State of Michigan and local county Drug and Substance Abuse Prevention Programs
and Office of Drug Control Policy)

The ACC’s Teen Health Center offers comprehensive
screening and diagnostic testing, immunization and inoculation, individual and family
counseling and preventive health education for the youth of the target community.
(Michigan Department of Public Health) The Pre-Natal and Postpartum Care Education Project
offers the expectant mother a full complement of health care referral and training in
child development, nutrition and postpartum aftercare.

Our Protective Services Project provides counseling and
assistance to youth and minor children and their families who are experiencing
difficulties in adjustment at home or school.

The ACC’s Job Training and Employment Project,
initiated during the Winter of 1988, and the successful Michigan Opportunities Skills
Training Project, provide English as a second language, employability skills, technical
training, on-the-job training and job placement services for the unemployed and or
    dislocated members of our community.

The ACC’s interface with human services agencies,
health care providers, schools (public and private), universities, community-based
organizations, law enforcement and government agencies, business and industry has
benefited over the years through our Cross-Cultural Awareness Seminars, designed to share
the unique aspects of our culture and the wealth of our proud heritage. We are committed
to building a bridge of understanding, grounded in respect and admiration.
