Career Development Facilitator (CDF) Training

What is a Career Development Facilitator (CDF)?

A Career Development Facilitator is an individual working in a variety of career development positions. Examples of a CDF may be a school counselor, job search trainer, career resource coordinator, career coach, career development case manager, intake interviewer, occupational and labor market resource person, human resource career development coordinator, employment specialist, or workforce development staff person.

Several professional groups have recognized that many individuals who are currently providing career assistance are not professional counselors or do not have specific career focussed training. The Career Development Facilitator credential was developed to provide standards, training specifications, and credentialing for career providers.

The growth of the Career Development Facilitator model was started by the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee (NOICC) through its Career Development Training Institute (CDTI), which has representatives from fifteen associations on its Board. Through a grant to Oakland University, Howard Splete, Judy Hoppins, and others standardized CDF skills and developed a CDF instructor-training curriculum.

The Career Development Institute placed its primary energy on the cultivation of a curriculum that focused on “Train the trainer model.” At present CDF instructors are developing or have developed programs in a variety of settings such as colleges, community colleges, and state agencies. These programs are delivered in various ways from an intensive three week session to a semester long training. The program may carry college credit, continuing education credit, and/or certificates of completion. The National Career Development Association, the National Employment Counseling Association, and the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals endorse the Career Development Facilitator training.

The course is designed for individuals who work in Career Resource Centers, Educational Systems, Career Preparation Systems, Business and Industry, Employment and Training Agencies, One- Stop Career Centers, Employment Services, Work First Programs, Vocational Rehabilitation, Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Programs, and other sites where career development services are provided.
Dr. Halyna Bialczyk, Educational Consultant from Wayne County RESA offered the following comments: “In the 21st century it is critical that everyone from Kindergarten through adult have academic, technological and employability skills. Career Development Facilitator training provides important techniques and tools to assure that all individuals have access to quality career development assistance in order to support the continuous development of high tech skills throughout their lifetimes.”
