SEMCA Celebration of Success 2002



March 15, 2002 marked SEMCA’s second annual Celebration of Success, which recognizes the efforts of individuals who have overcome significant barriers and successfully made use of the various SEMCA programs. Marilyn Opdyke, SEMCA Workforce Development Board Member and President of the Opdyke Group emceed the event.


Marilyn Opdyke was the MC for the annual event.
The guest list included Lieutenant Governor Dick Posthumus, State Senator Martha Scott, State Representatives Glenn Anderson, Andrew Richner, Ray Basham, and Gary Woronchak, Wayne County Commissioners Kay Beard and Susan Hubbard, Monroe County Commissioner and SEMCA Board Member Floreine Mentel, Mayor of Dearborn Michael Guido, and Dearborn Heights Mayor Ruth Canfield.

The Celebration of Success also acknowledged Hollingsworth Logistics and GKN Sinter Metals as employers who have contributed to the success of the SEMCA One-Stops. Ford Motor Company was also honored as the SEMCA Business Partner of the Year for their collaboration on the innovative Youth and Adult Automotive Training Center (YAATC) program. Tanika Coleman, Sylvester Chapman, and Karen Leach were also recognized as Models of Success for their participation in the YAATC program. The Taylor Teen Center was acknowledged for the SAVE (Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Educators) Peer Education Program.

The following are the individuals that were honored as SEMCA’s Models of Success for their progress through the various SEMCA programs and contractors: (Jim) Mucaj received services from the Information Center, Jodie Goble received services from Personalized Nursing Light House, Dorothy Shindak received services from the Guidance Center, Starlitt Gordon received services from Ross- Taylor, Kathy Lyons received services from Employment and Training Designs, Inc (ETDI), Jennifer Weldy received services from the Downriver Community Conference (DCC), Leonitta Turner and Donnielle Campbell received services from the American Society of Employers (ASE), Krystina Wallace received services from Monroe County Employment and Training Department, Greg Branham received services from Monroe County Intermediate School District, Kevin Berna received services from DCC, Naamat Al-Ashkar received services from ACCESS, Regina Cook received services from DCC, Joyce Mangum received services from Starfish Family Services, and Anwar and Shipa Bakth received services from Arab-American Chaldean Council. The Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn, Silver Spring School in Northville, and Western Wayne Skills Center in Livonia were recognized as award recipients of the Governor’s Excellence in Practice Awards.
