On August 11, The Downriver Community Conference (DCC) hosted a daylong Downriver Community Job-Information-Immunization Fair. John B. OReilly, Jr., SEMCAs Executive Director was joined by representatives of the Family Independence Agency (FIA) and the DCC as the ribbon was cut and the gates were opened to the Fair, held on the football field at the DCC. The event marked the first time area agencies worked together to sponsor such a comprehensive fair. Visitors to the Fair found several boothes from local compies conducting on the spot interviews. Activities for children who attended were conducted by the Child Care Coordinating Council (4Cs). The colorful tents and beautiful weather created a perfect setting for the days events. Activities also included fashion shows which gave tips on how to dress properly for job interviews, resume writing workshops, information on interview skills, and budgeting techniques. SEMCA customers were also treated to a scavenger hunt, which required them to stop at employer, training and information booths. Each of these booths would then give the participant a part of the A New Job A Fresh Start travel kits. These handy kits included a tooth brush, tooth paste, band-aids, miniature sewing kit, anti-bacterial hand gel, nail file, nail clippers, a hair brush and a zippered pouch to hold all of the items. SEMCA, a major sponsor of the days events, worked with Ross Learning, Inc., the Family Independence Agencies (FIA) of Taylor, Lincoln Park, and Inkster, Wayne County Head Start, the Child Care Coordinating Council (4Cs) and the Western Wayne Juvenile Justice Center to hold the Fair. The event was open to the public and specifically targeted to welfare reform customers who are served by the event sponsors. | |
