Purpose:The program objective is to help Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) maintain or regain their food stamp eligibility by participating in a qualifying work program or training activity. The long-term goal of the program is to assist individuals in obtaining unsubsidized employment.

Description:The work participation requirements can be met by participating in the Self-Initiated Community Service through the Family Independence Agency or referral to the Michigan Works! Agencies (MWA) for employment services.

Employment services and training activities available through the MWAs include unsubsidized employment, job search/job search training with workfare, work experience training, educational and training programs in combination with work that expand the job search abilities or that directly enhance the employability of the participant, vocational training in combination with work, and dual enrollment in other employment and training programs in combination with work.
Eligibility:Participants must be an ABAWD, aged 18 through 49, and able to work.
Procedure:The Michigan Department of Career Development (MDCD) has distributed federal Food Stamp funds for use by the 25 local MWAs must submit annual plans to the MDCD for approval. Funds are allocated on an annual basis starting in October of each year.
