On August 2, The Downriver Community Conference dedicated its Resource Room to long time employee Victor Haener, who passed away very suddenly in May of this year.

The ceremony was attended by members of Victor’s family including his wife Laurie, sons David and Mark, his sisters, daughter-in-law, and his step children.

DCC Executive Director, Jim Perry unveiled the dedication plaque which will be mounted next to the door of the resource room.

“Victor was an outstanding public servant and was very dedicated to the people he helped.” Jim Perry said following the ceremony. “It has been very hard for us at the DCC. He was a gem, one of those people who is irreplaceable.”

Victor Haener worked for 30 years as a public servant. In his last years, he worked in the corrections program at the Southgate Service Center that is staffed by the DCC.

At the dedication ceremony, SEMCA Executive Director, John B. O’Reilly, Jr. explained “Victor did not view the people that he was helping as criminals. He believed that they were only guilty of poor judgement, that they were products of their environment and didn’t always make the wisest decisions. He taught them how to make better decisions.”

The dedication ceremony was part of the Open House held that day for the newly renovated Michigan Works! Service Center at the DCC.
