Hayes-Lemmerz Employee Gathering

The Michigan Department of Career Development in conjunction with Michigan Works! Monroe County Employment and Training Department (which operates the SEMCA Monroe Service Center) and the Petersburg Empowerment Team (PET), held their first Hayes-Lemmerz Employee Gathering on Saturday, January 26, 2002, in Dundee, Michigan. The purpose of this meeting was to reunite employees after the closing of the company in December 2001.

A luncheon was provided, as well as entertainment for the children who attended. Guest speaker, Rob Sawyer, provided an inspirational message to the crowd of seventy former employees and their families, and the PET committee members.

The Human Resources from Hayes-Lemmerz staff was able to capture the former employees’ current status in regards to employment. Some attendees have been active in their job search, being called for interviews, and have actually obtained employment. The joint action committee, chaired by David LaBeau, has done an outstanding job in providing services to the laid-off employees. The committee is also planning a job fair in March to serve those employees who may still need employment services.

This event, and the PET, is a perfect example of partnering efforts toward a working relationship with former employees who are having difficulty regaining employment, to offer assistance with employment search, and stay in contact with employees who have been able to establish employment.
