Ficano Urges Citizens to be Cautious During Holiday Weekend

“We came along way but we still have further to go” are the words of Jenny Lozano, member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Wayne County Chapter, during the “By Land or By Sea” press conference held at Sheriff Robert Ficano’s office on August 29, in Detroit.

During the press conference Ficano announced plans for increased alcohol enforcement patrols on the roads and waterways in Wayne County. Ficano’s message was zero tolerance for drunk driving on land or water, underage drinking and non-use of safety belts during the last holiday weekend of the summer.

Ficano said the reason Michigan has come so far in its endeavor to improve safety conditions, is due to the combined efforts of education and law enforcement. “We have changed social acceptance of using alcohol and drugs,” said Ficano. “Years ago it was alright to be drunk, but the message has changed and now it’s not acceptable.”

“The culture has changed and we have pushed in that direction said Ficano,”
The campaign sponsored by the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance, PREVCO and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is an annual event geared to remind the public to be alcohol-free during the last big summer holiday weekend.
