A strong believer in workforce development - Charlie Mahoney devotes countless hours volunteering her time by helping businesses and individuals succeed with their workforce goals and objectives. As vice-chair of the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance’s (SEMCA) Workforce Development Board and chair of the Education Advisory Group, Mahoney understands business needs and the importance of a thriving workforce. For this reason, the Michigan Works! Association named her the 2003 Volunteer of the Year. “It is an honor to be chosen for an award by my peers in workforce development,” said Mahoney. “I am pleased to have a leadership role in bringing the needs of business and education together to build a better workforce for the future.” Mahoney’s experience with workforce development began in the early 1980s as a volunteer board member for the city of Livonia’s Comprehensive Employment Training Administration. With federal legislative changes, this organization evolved into the Job Training Partnership Act’s Private Industry Council for Wayne County. Mahoney was appointed by former Governor James Blanchard as a private industry council member and as chair of the Balance of Wayne County Private Industry Council for three years. |

Since 1996, Mahoney has devoted her time to helping SEMCA’s Workforce Board develop a “One-Stop” workforce delivery system under Governor Engler’s “No Wrong Door” policy.
Because of Mahoney’s passion for workforce development, state leaders often call on her to speak at conferences such as the Annual Governor’s Education Conference and the Annual Michigan Works! Conference. Mahoney’s volunteerism has not gone unnoticed. She is also the proud recipient of the Metropolitan Detroit YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award, the Livonia Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, the Monroe County NAACP Community Service Award, the Private Industry Council Member of the Year Award and she is an eight-time winner of the Detroit Edison Walter J. McCarthy Award for Volunteer Service. In addition to serving SEMCA, Mahoney is also an active member of the Henry Ford Community College M-TEC Training Alliance, the Livonia Family YMCA and the Monroe Exchange Club to name a few. She is past president of the Women’s Economic Club and chair elect of the United Way of Monroe County. “Serving on both the local Workforce Development Board and Education Advisory Group, Charlie Mahoney has embodied the spirit of volunteerism,” said Linda Kinney, executive director of the Michigan Works! Association. She has devoted many hours to workforce development in southeast Michigan and is a very deserving recipient of this award.” Mahoney says she looks forward to continuing to devote time and energy to meeting the challenges of change in the workforce development arena. |
