Rep. Richardville Meets with Monroe Veterans

The Thursday before Thanksgiving, District 56 Representative Randy Richardville came to our Monroe Service Center to speak one-on-one with veterans who are receiving help with their employment search.

Three veterans were in attendance: Christina M. Kackley, from the Navy; Vernon R. Groh from the Army and Deanna L. Clement also from the Army. The Michigan Department of Career Development (MDCD) was represented by Stacy Owen of Dr. Bolin’s staff and Hank Gelnor the Employment Services Administration (ESA) Regional Veterans Representative.

Being the Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Representative Richardville is concerned about veterans receiving assistance with not just their job search, but also with special needs that some veterans may have. “The service changes you, sometimes it is a positive experience, sometimes it is not.” Representative Richardville explained.

He asked the three veterans who were present to speak frankly about how their job search was progressing. If they had already found placement, he asked them to critique what their experience with Michigan Works! had been like.

Christina had left the Navy this past June, so she was still working with her job developer, Jeri Dushane, to develop a career plan. She is exploring non-traditional female occupations. Vernon currently has a job baking for Tim Horton’s, which has allowed him to support himself and purchase a vehicle, but is looking for something that would utilize his Associates Degree of Horticulture. Deanna who was retired, re-entered the job market recently and accepted a technical writing position in Ann Arbor.

U.S. Navy veteran Christina M. Kackley is currently pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Director of the Monroe County Employment and Training Department (MCETD), Barbara Verran, was there to explain that Michigan Works! identified veterans when they first come in for assistance. She explained that veterans are given preference when applying for positions. Veterans are identified on the Talent Bank. There is a 24 hour period, when job positions are first listed, in which the jobs are available to veterans only. Other supportive services are available at the service centers such as transportation assistance, substance abuse services, stress management classes, and assistance to veterans with disabilities.

Representative Richardville expressed his gratitude to the staff at the Monroe One Stop “These agencies are doing something for their country by helping these vets”.

Thanks to the help of the Monroe County Employment and Training Department, U.S. Army veteran Deanna L. Clement recently found a job as a technical writer.
