SEMCA Survivor

Written by the SEMCA Team Building/Social Committee.

This year’s SEMCA annual Team Day theme was “Survivor.” The staff was excited and ready to go!

Not only was this going to be a day of challenges, it was also a day to meet our new home on Eureka Road.

The day started with a light breakfast where we were introduced to our facilitators from Wayne RESA, Timo and Monique. They lead us into our daily challenges.

Two groups were formed and each facilitator lead their teams in exercises designed to encourage interaction between people and to build and strengthen “team relationships.”
Each exercises was designed to help with interaction between people and understanding the different personalities that exist in the work place.

Team Day Facilitators Timo and Monique from Wayne County RESA.
Both teams started off by forming a circle and introducing themselves by name. Staff members were asked to add an adjective to their name. They were instructed that the adjective must start with the first letter of their name and must describe their personality. Here are few examples: Jamming Judy, Creative Chris, Delightful Darlene, Caring Carol, Just Justine, Bombastic Bill, Boosting Brenetta, Dynamic Denise, Laughing Lisa, Cheerful Cheryl, Jumping Jason, Joyful Jennifer, Ecstatic Eileen, Terrific Theresa, Keen Keisha, Bouncing Beth, Merry Marilou, Jazzy Jack, Savvy Susan, Vivacious Veronica, Awesome Angela, Ambitious Anne Marie, Marvelous Marjorie, Busy Barb, Talented Tamara, and Glorious Gloria.

Each person was required to remember how the person before them was introduced and demonstrate their name, adjective and action as well. What a wonderful way to break the ice!

We each walked away with new perspectives on each of the team members.

Monique then led her team into the toxic waste game. The Team had to work as an effective group to move a can of beans from one location to another without spilling or touching the can. The beans represented SEMCA’S providers, contracts, customers, relationships in the community and funding sources.

This was a difficult challenge, but because of continued communication and teamwork, SEMCA was able to achieve their goal without spilling one bean. Great job team!

Timo’s team also performed the toxic waste challenge, but with a different twist. They were required to cross the toxic waste dump to SEMCA by using the pieces of wood (boards) given to them. The boards, like the pot of beans, were representative all the needs of SEMCA. If the team lost contact with a board, the board was taken away and the challenge became much harder to reach the goal. It took a tremendous amount of teamwork, concentration and communication to accomplish this exercise.

The team participated in other games, which built on team work, trust, communication, cohesion and efficiency. Afterwards there was a barbeque lunch provided by TV’s Deli and Diner.

The afternoon portion of Team Day was conducted by SEMCA’S Executive Director John B. O’Reilly, Jr. During this session, SEMCA Staff discussed the book “Fish.”
This event was organized by the Team Building/Social Committee.
