This fall, SYSCO Food Services of Detroit very generously donated 71 computers to SEMCA provider Employment and Training Designs, Inc. (ETD) and the Highland Park Academy. SYSCO is one of the companies in our region that is forging the way for business to partner with SEMCA in training and extending a helping hand to those who need help in our community. SEMCA hopes that other businesses in the area will follow this example by stepping up to the plate with future programs geared toward improving the careers of the residents of our region. ETD decided to use these donated computers to help some of its Family Independence Agency (FIA) training program graduates. |

On October 18th, the first presentation was made. Recipients were selected from the recently concluded the Highland Park Academy Summer Project Training A+. Graduates. Those with exemplary attendance records and the highest grades were chosen to receive computers. The computers are Packard Bell models with CD ROM, 1.2 GB hard drive, 120 mhz Intel processors, with 16MB of RAM. The computers came with internal modems, monitors, mouse and keyboards. |

When the women learned that they would each be taking home a computer, the emotional response was overwhelming. Many tears were shed and hugs were exchanged all around the room as they thanked the representatives from SYSCO, SEMCA, ETD, the Highland Park Academy and FIA who were present for the ceremony.
The recipients, as well as their entire families will benefit from the convenience of having this equipment in their homes. Hopefully through distance learning and everyday use, this very thoughtful donation will help us in the battle of the digital divide. |
