One of the most common obstacles for people seeking employment is continual lack of transportation.
The rising prices of vehicles, auto insurance, maintenance, and fuel have put the luxury of owning an automobile out of the reach of some Wayne and Monroe county residents. Where public transportation does exist, people have found that some of the bus schedules do not coincide with their work or child care schedules. SMART is working with SEMCA on this issue, but unavoidable gaps in service still exist. |

After hearing these complaints from both job seekers and employers for several years, the SEMCA Welfare Reform team decided that one short term answer to this problem would be to provide transportation for our clients.
This year SEMCA purchased a total of nine vehicles. Three of them are mini vans, the other six are 15 passenger vehicles. The vans were detailed by Jiffy Signs of Dearborn Heights. They now have the SEMCA 1-888-515-JOBS number on their sides to inform more people of our programs. One side focuses on the job seeker and the other side targets the employer. | |

Are the vans being used? Ask SEMCA contactor ETD.
“Our vans fulfill a variety of transportation needs for our program customers.” said ETD’s Grace Lewis.
“We have a total of five drivers and vans. Our service is available five days a week, with Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays being our busiest days.”
Drivers’ schedules can begin as early as 6:00 am and can sometimes last until 6:00pm. |

The number of customers serviced can vary from day to day, but Mrs. Lewis confirmed that there are many times when the 15 passenger vans are full. Transportation services are customized to meet each participant’s needs. Customers may be transported to work, to child care providers for their children, to interviews, training and pre-employment physicals/drug screening. “A major portion of our van service is utilized to transport customers to critical Job Readiness and Job Club activities offered at our site.” said Mrs. Lewis. The vans are also available to shuttle customers to and from special events such as job fairs. This program has made a major impact of the lives of our clients. It has already helped many people to achieve career goals, and will continue to impact the SEMCA workforce region. |
