Providing guidance to help motivate and encourage people to better their way of life is a top priority for Thomas Waldecker, new vice chair of SEMCA’s Substance Abuse Board (SEMSAS). For 21 years, Waldecker has been an influential leader and role model to his peers and clients and continues his legacy of making a difference in people’s lives. As the new vice-chair of the SEMSAS board, Waldecker’s responsibilities include reviewing the executive director’s goals for SEMCA along with the executive committee and approve and award contracts for substance abuse providers. “Our goal is to assure that clients have appropriate resources to help them get out of current predicaments and put them on the right pathway,” said Waldecker. Waldecker who has a bachelor’s of science in history from Eastern Michigan and a master’s of social work from the University of Michigan School of Social Work has an extensive background in Substance Abuse Treatment and Administration and Employee Assistance Consulting. His current role as Director of the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program for the University of Michigan keeps him abreast of client relations. |

Since 1998, Waldecker has served as Director of the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, and his main responsibilities include managing short-term counseling and mediation services to more than 23,000 faculty and staff of the University of Michigan. In addition to serving as the Director of the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, Waldecker is a member of various community organizations. They include: chairman and member of Board of Trustees for Monroe County Community College, member of Academy of Certified Social Workers (A.C.S.W), member of the National Association of Social Workers, member of International Association Employee Assistance Programs in Education Association, member of the American College of Mental Health Administration, member of the Monroe County Humane Society, member of the University of Michigan Workplace Violence Prevention Training Team. Waldecker and wife Lillian Ames reside in Carleton, Michigan and they have a son named Sean. In his spare time he enjoys gardening, roller-blading, bike riding and collecting various music ranging from jazz to rock and roll. Waldecker also enjoys reading in his spare time. One book he recommends is “The Four Agreements/A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz. “The book is great because it helps people get a true perspective on life and take responsibility,” said Waldecker. A strong leader who cares about society, Waldecker continues to uplift and enrich society so people will have a better future. |
